On-Grid, Hybrid or Off-Grid: Which Is Right for You?
Every solar setup falls into one of three types. Choosing the right one is mostly about two things: whether you want backup power during outages, and how much you're willing to invest. Here's how they compare.
On-Grid (Grid-Tied)
The most affordable and most common choice. Your panels feed your home and the excess goes to the grid for net-metering credits. There's no battery, so it's the cheapest per watt and has the fastest payback.
The trade-off: when Meralco goes down, your system shuts off too (a safety requirement). No backup during brownouts.
Hybrid (Grid-Tied + Battery)
The best of both worlds for most homes. You stay connected to the grid and get net-metering credits, but you also add a battery that stores daytime solar for use at night or during outages.
It costs more upfront because of the battery, but you get backup power and you can use more of your own solar instead of buying it back after dark.
Off-Grid
Completely independent from Meralco, running entirely on panels and a large battery bank. Ideal for remote properties with no reliable grid connection.
For a typical city or suburban home it's usually overkill — you'd need a very large (and expensive) battery to cover every cloudy day, with no grid to fall back on.
